I wondered if I should put up a post this week. Sometimes, the news is just so sad that it feels wrong to laugh about anything at all. Yet, in the wake of the tragedy in Nashville and the horrific storms in Mississippi, the internet crowd managed to find a way to distract. Here’s the response to some of the big stories of this last week of March, 2023. 

BOOK 'EM, DIVA: FIVE FICTION FAVES OF 2022

Now that I am a government-sanctioned Diva of Leisure, (I've got a Medicare card as proof!) I have more time to pursue my favorite hobby - reading. I was that kid who hid in the bedroom closet when I was supposed to be sleeping so I could squeeze in another chapter of my library book. As a full-grown Diva who can pick her own bedtime, I read at least eight novels a month. So, like Reeces with its peanut butter cup, I'm combining my two favorite things, reading and blogging, by writing book recommendations of my faves.  There's no time to waste so, let's get started with my Top 5 Novels of 2022.

 This week brought us the arrival of Spring, Ramadan (The Muslim time of fast),  rumors of the arrest of a former President (started by said former President), and the potential US ban of the popular social app Tik Tok. Most importantly, it is the early onset of allergy season. Get those hankies ready as we check out the internet’s response to the top stories of the third week in the miserable month of March! Achooo!

This is the week when memes were flying so fast and furious that it was almost impossible to keep up. The Oscars arrived right on the heels of DST and were abruptly followed by Pi Day, Ides of March, and the wearing of the green. Banks crashed, Russia shot down a drone, and Angela Bassett did not win an Academy Award. What did social media have to say about it all? Plenty! 

THE DIVA'S GUIDE TO BEST PICTURE

As a diva, albeit an invisible one, I like to weigh in on all things cultural. In the months of February and March, I settle in to view the Academy Award nominees so I can spend Oscar night with my Box-O-Wine by my side cheering on my picks. If I were a voting member of the Academy, I'd have my own, distinct criteria to choose the most deserving nominee in each category. For example, for  Best Picture I would not reject compelling story-telling, stunning cinematography, brilliant directing, and flawless acting. However, I'd ask myself these questions: Did I actually like the film? Did I nod off at some point? Could I describe the plot to a friend in three sentences or less?  Bonus points if I cry. Demerits if I can’t watch it in one sitting. So, which 2023 nominees rose to my stringent guidelines? I present to you my rankings.

While the Russian assault on Ukraine continues, America is bracing to take on its biggest internal threat - drag queens. When they heard the news of another impressive month of job numbers, the GOP replied,  "But are those jobs woke?" Also, while trains around the nation are derailing, Tucker Carlson is on track to win the  Fox News award for Most Fibs Per Feature. What did the internet have to say? Let's listen in!

I was fully prepared for this to be a slow news week. Who could have predicted that, while earthquakes continue to devastate Syria and Turkey,  Lauren Boebert  would announce her pronouns are Ultra and Maga? Who knew that, as the Pacific Northwest got walloped by powerful storms,  Marjorie Taylor Green would continue to make the case for the Red States divorcing the Blue? (Personally, I'd like to know the terms.Who gets custody of the Great Lakes?) But could anyone have predicted that Cancel Culture would come in like a lion? Let's see what people are saying about the goings on this week!
